Mark and Gary's Journey Home : After attending Nick and Kate's wedding on 22nd august 2009, Gary and I decided we would have a leisurely breakfast on Sunday morning at the Hotel and then make our way across the Surrey countryside to Hersham were we grew up.
The Journey started with a stop off at Newlands Corner, nr Guildford, on the Dorking road. It is a very popular beauty spot. Took loads of pictures of bikes, trikes and their owners, passengers etc.
The next stop was the Silent Pool and a quite magical thing happened. While gazing out over the lower pool from the observation point a pair of mating Darter Dragonflies landed on Gary's forehead. Thankfully I had my camera with me and got a few shots ( ok a lot of shots) before they flew off. Then they landed back on his hand and I managed to get some closer shots. I couldnt believe my luck!
With the shots of the Silent Pool you have to look very closely, because the water is CRYSTAL clear and much of the foliage you see is UNDER WATER! The magical thing is athat there is a flow of water but you cant see it. The foliage never moves and the surface of the water has no ripples whatsoever and the only clue is that he upper pool has a water fall which feeds the lower pool but that is the only place you see the water moving!
Then we went on to Box Hill. we resisted the temptation to role down the hill like we did when we were young (so long ago) as we both agreed that it would take too much effort to climb back up again. Just as well as we would have missed harle the Labradoodle and his owner. He is just soooooo cute! and VERY soft to the touch.
After that we went to Hersham and to Burvale Cemetery where our father is buried and I managed to get a shot of the entry from the Register and the plan of the cemetery layout. We also went to Pembroke Avenue and it is not a bit like our childhood memories. Much has changed, while somethings are always the same. Its hard to imagine that we used to play football in the road and to us it seemed so wide and long when we were small. Now you can just about drive down a single track left by the cars parked either side of the road. We drove around to see our old schools which havent changed one bit in 30+ years and then may our way back along the Seven Hills Road and on to the M25 to make for Cambridge.
A most enjoyable day of brotherly bonding.
